Scared
and faced with losing someone he cared for, Ryder made a
bargain in the heat of the moment that will come back and
change his life forever. Five years later, when the sexy
Ace Belmont comes to collect Ryder’s debt, the price is
Ryder’s soul, but he may be paying with his heart as well.
Ace lost
his soul a long time ago. Now he walks the earth enslaved by
evil as a soul collector. Ace wants badly to retain his
soul and atone for his sins. There is no place in his
existence for love, but that may be unavoidable when it
comes to Ryder.
Payment Due is more on the darker side than I
expected. There’s a sad tone to the story, which I guess
should be expected for a story about lost souls. The
characters are strong, beautiful, and sexy, especially Ryder
and Ace. There’s a great passion between them, but I found
it hard to connect with them. I did care for Steven, and I
wished things were different for him, and I cared for Julian
who appears later in the book. The book, as a whole, is
dark, eerie, and beautiful all at once. It’s full of
heartbreak, loneliness, and need -- a lot of need. There is
the need to be loved, the need to be wanted, the need to be
remembered, the need to make a difference, and the need to
make amends. Although I wasn't totally captivated by
Payment Due, I did appreciate it and found it to be
a story worth reading. It made me think about the fragility
and strengths of one's soul and to be aware of promises made
in a moment of weakness and despair. You never know who’s
listening and will hold you to them. |
