Author Spotlight

I had the opportunity to chat with a wonderful author who took time out of her schedule to answer a few questions. So, without further delay, letís hear from

Raine Delight

Did you always know that you would be a writer? Are you able to write full-time or do you have a pesky day job, also?
I always loved books and getting lost within their worlds. After stumbling onto the world of e-books, I found a whole new world to explore. I al ways wrote but just scribbling and nothing that even resembled a story in book form. Until one day I read one book that had me wanting to make it better and then I put the computer to the paper, so to speak, and finished a book that was particularly awful. *smiles* I enjoyed it though those pesky voices in the head make me feel like I have several personas. *laughs* I got encouragement from some writer friends and soon submitted my first book, Sticky Magic and it was accepted. The rest just came after that and I never looked back.

I work part time in a day job to support my writing habit. *laughs* It pays the bills right now and I eventually would like to write full time and make tons of money. *smiles*

You write in several genres, do you have a favorite? And is there one you would like to try that you have not tried?
I love the paranormal genre as it gives me much to explore and write about but I am branching out to BDSM genre as well as a futuristic/Science Fiction one that just came to me after reading an article about gamma rays.

Tell us some of your favorites. (i.e. authors, foods, movies, books, music, hobbies, and any others.)
Authors: I have many with more coming each day it seems. *smiles* Bertrice Small, J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts, Debbie Macomber, Sierra Dafoe, L.A. Banks, Skyler Sinclair, Gena Showalter, plus many other so numerous to mention I would be here all day. *smiles*

Foods: I adore good Chinese, Italian, tex-mex food. I lived down south for a few years and adore the food down there except it can get fattening so I try to make up recipes that cut the fat out but not the taste. Plus any cheesecake from the Cheesecake factory is good to me.

Movies: Anything with Johnny Depp is good to me. *laughs* I enjoy a good action-adventure, romance, end of the world movies. I watch to escape and relax. Recently, my honey and I watched all three Bourne movies with Matt Damon and enjoyed them immensely.

Music: I love anything by Michael Buble, Bon Jovi, Andrea Boucelli, plus other stuff that makes it way into my books.

Books: I adore the In Death series by JD Robb, Anything by Bertrice Small. I Love the Luna line and their books. I have a notebook that has lists of authors and books I would love to get. I think I need a house just for my books. *laughs*

Hobbies: I read when I can, watch movies, listen to music, and spend time with my honey and kids. I did all my traveling before I had kids so it is basically out of my system. I prefer just spending time with my loved ones and friends.

How would you describe yourself?
I think quiet, private and a little shy. I like being online and letting my wicked other half out since in real life, she would probably be arrested. *laughs*

When writing do you need a quiet office setting or can you write anywhere?
I can not write in a notebook. Give me a blank word doc. And I am happy as can be. I like having music on as it helps me relax and let them muse chatter away in my head.

What was the best piece of advice that you received when you began writing? Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
To write what you know and just let go. Always keep creating, even if it is the worst thing you think you wrote. Edit after you write and donít stop. If you get to a wall, either do something else or push through it.

Advice: Just keep honing your craft. Learn from other writers, editors and make sure to trust your instincts.

Do you plan your stories out before you begin writing or does the story develop as you write?
The story just goes by itself. I canít plot worth a hill of beans. My characters hate that since they are the ones yelling at me. *smiles*

What would a perfect day for you be?
A perfect day would be spending time with my honey and two kids. We would hike at a local state park, watch the sun drop and just relax together. Any time spent with them is perfect to me though being alone on ďdate nightĒ with  my honey is even better with no kids for a bit. *smiles*

Do you enjoy hearing from your readers and what is the best way to contact you?
I adore hearing from readers. They can reach me a variety of ways:

My Space:

I am redoing my website and getting a whole new one but you can check out the one I have now to see what is new and see reviews, contests and other stuff.

What is one of your most memorable experiences?
I think when I got my 1st review and was amazed that someone actually enjoyed my writing. It made it more real to me and happier than ever. J

How do you promote your work?
I send out a periodic newsletter ( plus I update my blog and my My Space page weekly or monthly as well. I do a monthly publisher chat when I can find time in between my day job and try to do a bunch of chats leading up to new releases as well.

Do you have a difficult time letting your characters go after you have finished their story? Do you have a favorite?
Yes I do. I love my characters though some days I want to bash them from their antics. My favorite would have to be Raven from Devon Falls: Red Hot Magic. She is so unlike me (tall, willowy, blond) and very cynical on men. But then again, each character keeps in my heart long after they are done with their stories and I hope to revisit some soon.

Do you have someone who you consider a mentor or an inspiration?
I am inspired by fellow authors who have been in the business for years and are able to create books that readers enjoy! J.K. Rowling is a prime example of success hitting fast and over the years created a world that appealed and loved by many! She had nothing and ended up with so much more that I strive to make my mark in some way.

Is your family supportive of your writing and do they read your work?
My honey is very supportive of my work. He is the one who helps me when I am feeling blue or when I am hitting a wall. He also is my biggest cheerleader as well. My immediate family hate that I write sexy and erotic. They call it a ďstarving artistĒ career and I should do something else. I donít take anything by it though it hurts that they are so dismissive of it, but as longs as someone is enjoying my books and reading them, that is all that matters to me.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us? Any current or upcoming releases?
I love to hear from readers and I hope you enjoy my work.

I have a series from Aspen Mountain Press ( two which are available now and 3 more coming with in the next year.

Devon Falls Series:

1: Sticky Magic (in Babes in Toyland II anthology) *out now*

2: Red Hot Magic *out now*

3: Fiery Magic *coming summer 2008*
